World Tourism Day 2026: Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence – Shaping the Future of Tourism

On the 27th of September 2026, tourism practitioners, professionals, policymakers, investors, destination managers and stakeholders across Nigeria and around the world mark World Tourism Day.

This year’s focus on Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence in Tourism is both timely and significant. As technology continues to reshape how people live, work and travel, the tourism industry must evolve with it. The future of tourism will depend not only on the beauty and uniqueness of our destinations, but also on how effectively we use technology to promote, manage and connect those destinations to the world.

Nigeria’s Tourism Potential

Nigeria has enormous tourism potential.

From our rich cultural heritage and traditional institutions to festivals, historical sites, wildlife, beaches, waterways, cuisine, creative industries and diverse communities, our country has countless stories, experiences and destinations waiting to be discovered.

As a proud son of Emede Kingdom in Isoko Nation, Delta State, I come from a people with a rich history, culture, traditions and community heritage that contribute to Nigeria’s wider cultural wealth. My roots remind me that some of our greatest tourism assets are not necessarily found in major cities or established tourist destinations. They are also found in our communities, kingdoms, villages and indigenous cultures.

The question is: How do we bring these treasures to the attention of the world?

This is where digital technology and Artificial Intelligence can make a real difference.

Harnessing Technology for Tourism

Digital destination marketing, virtual tourism experiences, online booking platforms, digital payment systems, multilingual visitor information, data-driven tourism planning and AI-powered customer engagement can make Nigeria’s destinations more visible, accessible and attractive to both domestic and international visitors.

Technology can also help us better understand visitors, identify emerging travel trends, improve destination management and create more personalised tourism experiences.

But digital transformation must be about more than technology. It must be about people.

Our digital tourism agenda should create opportunities for young Nigerians, empower local communities, support small and medium-sized tourism businesses, preserve our cultural heritage and ensure that the economic benefits of tourism reach the communities where our attractions are located.

Building a Responsible Digital Tourism Sector

As tourism practitioners, we must embrace innovation while maintaining professionalism, accountability, ethical standards and responsible tourism practices.

In my capacity as National Internal Auditor of the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN), I recognise the importance of sound systems, transparency, credible data and accountability in building a tourism sector that can attract investment and earn the confidence of visitors, businesses and development partners.

Digitalisation should not simply make tourism faster. It should make tourism smarter, more inclusive, more transparent and more sustainable.

This is also an opportunity for Nigeria to take greater control of its tourism narrative and tell its own story to the world.

Through technology, we can showcase our heritage, promote our destinations, document our cultures, preserve our history, create jobs and position Nigeria more prominently on the global tourism map.

A Collective Responsibility

The future of Nigerian tourism cannot be built by government alone. It requires collaboration among tourism practitioners, private investors, technology innovators, traditional institutions, local communities, development partners and young Nigerians.

Together, we can build a tourism ecosystem that embraces innovation while protecting the culture, heritage and communities that make our destinations unique.

The time has come to move beyond simply celebrating Nigeria’s tourism potential. We must harness technology to turn that potential into sustainable opportunities, jobs, investment and inclusive economic growth for our people and our nation.

On this World Tourism Day, let us embrace the possibilities of digital transformation and Artificial Intelligence while ensuring that technology remains a tool for people, communities and sustainable development.

Happy World Tourism Day 2026 to all tourism practitioners, professionals and stakeholders across Nigeria and around the world.
